Is there a band director in the house?
Jesse Farnlof becomes the director in 2021
Since moving on to a second career after being a school band director for 18 years, I decided it was time to join a band. I just wanted to get out of the house and play my instrument.
A few weeks before rehearsal the band president Ken Keisow emailed everyone to encourage attendance at a “critical” meeting where “decisions would be made that could impact the future of the band”. I, like most, figured it was regarding COVID regulations, as this was the first season back from a year-long COVID absence. So I dutifully showed up.
The meeting cruised along as I watched quietly from the back of the room. Finally it was Ron Gard’s turn to speak. He broke the news that it was time for him to retire. He just couldn’t risk the health of his grandson.
The board discussed possible replacements. After a few names were thrown about Ken finally asked if there were any directors in the band. I slowly raised my hand. A few minutes later I became the interim director of the CVCB.
I’m not sure what happened to the interim tag. I guess it was whisked away along with my opportunity to play my saxophone. Thank heavens for the Municipal Band!
